In the past six weeks, I’ve been trying to learn to design a new website with Divi, and used Canva to create graphic design elements to promote my books.
It’s been a serious challenge. I like to say, “I love technology, but technology does not love me back.” Because despite all the advances, and things like AI, you still have to learn to use new things. I love it when someone says, “it’s intuitive”. Maybe for some folks, but my learning process is visual to written. It must be the writer in me, because I can watch YouTube videos over and over again. But the process only works for me when I transcribe the steps into words.
So, I have notebooks. I’ve always enjoyed creating a system of 3-ring binders that include written notes, images, research and ideas. My Techbooks are based on the same principles of organization. I sort the various technologies into categories, then break down the steps. I wish I had a memory that allowed me to see a thing and then just do it.
Not gonna happen. It’s not just age, (yeah, you get older, you forget things), but my personal learning style. I’ve always preferred written words. I was a great notetaker in school, even learning from a teacher how to organize notes for order and clarity. And I make it fun by using arrows, clouds, and color pens.
Still, it sometimes feels like I’m using an old technique for advanced systems. I’m sure there are new ways to transcribe and organize the things I’m learning.
Yet, to be honest, I like my system. And as long as it works, even if it’s clunky, I’m going to keep using it. I’ve decided that speed isn’t my priority. LEARNING is, and the sense of accomplishment I get when I make something work is worth the effort.
